Our family loves to plant sunflowers. This year we didn't plant a new batch. We just let them grow where the seeds dropped last year. A few years ago I planted Burgundy decorative sunflowers. All I got was tiny yellow sunflowers. This year sprinkled in with all the sunflowers of yellow - are some with varying amounts of Burgundy. In the past our sunflowers have been 6 or 7 feet tall and we harvest the seeds. This year they are much smaller and the birds are getting all the seeds. We love watching them out our front window. We also allow pumpkins to grow in our front yard as well. Each year we clean the pumpkins for jack o laterns on the front porch then brush the seeds into the planters. Every year we get a pumpkin patch in the front yard. Every year I wonder if we are going to get a letter from our HOA because our front yard has a definite country cottage look. This year we have two large pumpkins growing. The most we have ever harvested in one year is 9. Watching the sunflowers and the pumpkins grow is one family tradition that takes all most no work but from which we get a lot of enjoyment .
